The Season of Layers: Early Fall Style

Yeah, I said the F word. Right in the title of the blog. FALL. It’s coming! Or at least that’s what I like to tell myself as I sweat buckets throughout the summer. There’s something really calming about the fall. Being able to walk outside without panting like a dog, not getting pit stains on every shirt and mostly being able to dress in my favourite type of clothing: layers, rich colour palettes, scarves and booties.

The Season Of Layers Early Fall Style

So what types of layered styles can you rock in early fall as you say goodbye to the sweatyness of summer? Here are 5 looks you can try out:

1. The Classic: T-Shirt and Leather Jacket

This will forever be a go-to look, no matter the decade or how the trends change. Whether you own a vegan leather jacket or a real leather jacket (no judgement here!) you will get a million wears out of it and still make it look gorgeous every time.

2. The T-Shirt Under Dress Combo

I think my mom would dress me up like this on the regular as a child. I didn’t quite understand it at the time, but looking at recent trends, I’ve come to appreciate this style again. I personally want to be wear the lace cami and t-shirt dress combo throughout the early fall and into the cooler months if I can!

3. Dungarees (or Overalls depending on where you live)

Say it with me now: dun-gar-ees. Again, this is somewhat of a childhood throwback, but I think everyone at some point has worn dungarees. I think they can look silly in some forms ( like don’t get some cut-off dungarees that are a bleached denim) but when well-cut and styled, they can look like a real “adult” outfit. All you have to do is throw on a pair of dungarees with a t-shirt, button up or blouse underneath and you have an outfit!

Early Fall Trends: Layering the Canadian Tuxedo, Denim on Denim

4. The Canadian Tuxedo (or the denim-on-denim look)

In recent years, I’ve been donning the Canadian tuxedo more than I’d like to admit. But so what? I just really like denim, okay? I’m not suggesting to try out the Britney Spears J.T look a la 2001, but you can definitely wear jeans and a denim jacket and make it look great. And there are so many weights for denim jackets. You can find ones that are heavy and classic from places like Levi’s, or you can find thinner ones from the Gap.

My suggestion: Go for different washes of denim on the top and bottom. If you’re wearing a light blue denim jacket, go for a dark black pair of jeans. Or, you can try a colourful pair of jeans.

5. Skirts and Thin Tights

One reason I dislike summer is because I have to shave my legs all. the. damn. time.

But guess what, in fall and winter, you can get away with a few days (read: weeks) of laziness if you pop on a pair of tights with a skirt. One of my favourite looks is wearing a leather (or vegan leather) skirt with tights and a pair of booties. There are so many skirts out there to choose from, but as you transition from summer into fall, your best choice is wearing a mini or above-the-knee skirt with thinner tights. It keeps the fun of summer going with a little warmth and layering for fall.

I’ve been guilty of the Canadian Tuxedo lol, but I always make sure my jeans are darker than my jean jacket. #5 also looks great with a nice pair of ankle boots too 🙂

Ankle boots are great! I need to get more to rotate through with my fall outfits 🙂
